The vehicle of retired NFL linebacker, Junior Seau, ended up on a beach in Carlsbad, California after the former NFL star drove it off a cliff, intentionally, early Monday morning (October 18).

According to local news outlets, 41-year-old Seau drove his Cadillac SUV off a cliff just hours after he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.

Seau was arrested in Oceanside, California at around 2:00 a.m. Monday morning following an incident with his live-in girlfriend, and was released shortly after once he posted bail.

Details regarding the arrest were unknown at press time.

According to TMZ, Seau was in the SUV when it went over the cliff and survived.

Reports said Carlsbad police responded to a 911 call of a single vehicle off the road and dispatched police and fire personnel. Seau’s Cadillac SUV was found on the beach 30 feet below the roadside.

He was transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, and was reportedly conscious and and remains hospitalized with minor injuries.

An investigation is underway.

Seau is an former NFL great, who made the Pro-Bowl 12 times during his long career, playing for the Chargers, Dolphins and Patriots. He played all the way up to last year, appearing in seven games for New England. He was drafted into the NFL in 1990 with the 5th overall pick.

Earlier this year, Seau announced his retirement for a second time.
